A number of acts have chipped in money to help out the city of Flint, Mich. as they deal with a toxic water crisis, but the ecological disaster hits a little closer to home for King 810, who hail from the Michigan city. As such, the band recently recorded a new track called “We Gotta Help Ourselves” that is just one of two fundraisers they’ve started for their hometown.
The song incorporates news reports about the lead-infused water along with a portion of President Obama’s speech where he declared a federal emergency in Flint. Frontman David Gunn delivers increasingly intense vocals played out over a solitary but building drum beat and some piano backing.
In addition to the song, the band has teamed with local Flint outlet Savage Village to create a unique t-shirt that will be sold in support of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint’s Flint Child Heath & Development Fund with 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to the foundation. You can check out and purchase the shirt at this location.
Gunn commented, “We chose to work with the Flint Child Health & Development Fund because we believe children are the most important people in the equation. They’re also affected the most by what’s going on. Aside from the urgent need for clean water, it’s important to focus on the long term effects that could come as a result to this exposure, so that’s our main focus here.”
The needs of Flint children exposed to lead are ongoing and long-term. A donation to the Flint Child Health & Development Fund will be used for critical interventions today and well into the future.
The Fund, established at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, is a supplemental resource to the ongoing pursuit of state and federal funding. Grants will be advised by a committee of community members with representation from residents, Hurley Children’s Hospital, Mott Children’s Health Center, Greater Flint Health Coalition, United Way of Genesee County and the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. Donations can be made here.
